Excessively absorbent surface, wind and wrong product selection cause cracking in grouts. Kalekim reveals the secret to have perfect grouts.

One of the most important issues that requires mastery in finishing of works is the grouting of tiles. Although these applications have become easier today thanks to the wide product range, generally accepted rules do not change. The most important of these rules and the one that requires mastery is to ensure that the grouting does not crack. Kalekim lists the causes of cracking and suggested solutions as follows:

Causes:

The surface is excessively absorbent,
Not choosing products suitable for joint width,
Insufficient dampening of the surface,
Improper adjustment of the water quantity,
High ambient and/or surface temperature,
Exposure of the surface to the wind,
Wiping the surface with excessive water,
Failing to fill the joint completely.

Solutions:

Products suitable for joint width must be chosen,
Joints should be thoroughly  dampened with water,
Water quantity should be well adjusted by complying with what is stated on the package,
It should not be applied under direct sun and at high temperatures,

After the application, the surface should be protected from the wind.
